NEW YORK FASHION WEEK takes place twice yearly. For every FASHION WEEK we take responsibility for and design 50 diverse shows for over 50 fashion designers and labels at two different venues.
Conceptual Challenges:
Fashion shows bring their own specific challenges, including the individual design and application of the different shows within the fast-paced schedule of show day, as well as the specific lighting requirements of fashion shows in general. Along the entire length of the catwalk, not only does the light have to be exactly even and somewhat brighter than average, but also – similar to the set-up in a professional modelling studio – very flat and almost frontal in terms of positioning. The decisive factors here are the overall artistic impact on the audience and the requirement to create ideal lighting for photographers and TV teams. A catwalk is equally a stage and a workspace. These two completely separate demands have to be optimally combined. On top of this the lighting design has to work with the overall artistic concept (Fashion + Models + Music + Light) and create a unique visual language for each show.
Technical Challenges:
The choice and positioning of the right high quality lighting equipment according to exactly calculated efficiency levels is crucial. The next step is to calibrate the instruments incredibly precisely; a process looked after by skilled and highly qualified head lighting technicians and lighting technicians. A well-considered and tightly structured sequence for the lighting control rig is also indispensable, so that in the little time available for run-throughs and the actual show, creative freedom can be employed to get the results to pull off a truly unique show.
